Popular Theatre Co Founding Artistic Director
Francesco Bertoni Honored as 2024 Legacy Award Winner: Celebrating Leadership in the Arts
2024 marks the fifth recipient of the prestigious Legacy Award, named in honor of The Very Popular Theatre Company’s original Artistic Director, Victor Emeljanow. This highly esteemed accolade is awarded to an individual who demonstrates exceptional leadership within the arts community and plays an instrumental role in maintaining and enhancing the professional foundation of not only The Very Popular Theatre Company but also the broader arts landscape in the region.

Previous honorees include Brooke Lidbury (2019), Luke Power (2021), Jason Factor (2022) and Jon Murphy (2023). Each year, winners are chosen from a shortlist of standout nominees, selected by the company’s Associate Artists and Producers. Nominees are artists and performers who have contributed significantly to one or more productions during the current season.
Francesco Bertoni's recognition comes as no surprise to those familiar with his standout contributions to the company's recent production. His involvement in Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins was nothing short of transformative. Portraying both the spirited park statue Neleus and the animated toy Valentine, Bertoni showcased his remarkable range as a performer. Beyond his roles on stage, he displayed exemplary leadership by mentoring emerging talent, fostering a collaborative environment, and inspiring cast and crew members to elevate their performances. His dedication and unwavering professionalism for the production’s demanding choreography further cemented his reputation as an influential figure within the theatre community.

Bertoni was celebrated as the 2024 award recipient during the closing night festivities of Mary Poppins at the Civic Theatre on 20th October, with the announcement made by Alexandra Emeljanow, daughter of Victor Emeljanow and Mary Poppins Producer of Daniel Stoddart.
